study questions:

For the Next Lesson: 1 Corinthians 3:16-4:5

1. Read verses 3:16-17. What is a temple, and what is a temple’s purpose? What makes a person “God’s Temple”? What does Paul have in mind when he talks about destroying God’s Temple? If we see ourselves as God’s Temple, what implications does this have on our lives? What is our primary purpose in life, how should we eat, how should we spend our time, etc.?

2. Read verses 3:18-23. How can somebody become wise by becoming a “fool” as it states in verse 18 (see also 1 Corinthians 1:18-25)? What is Paul’s point in verses 18-20, and why do you think he is making this point? Why is it important for us to remember this? According to verses 21-23, why should we not “boast in men”? What does Paul mean by “all things are yours”? What does this mean for us as 21st century Christians?

3. Read verses 4:1-2. In verse 1, Paul wants people to see him in two different roles. What are these roles, and what does each role mean? Do we have these same two roles in our lives? Why or why not? If we embraced these two roles, how would it impact the way we see ourselves, relate to others, and live our lives?

4. Read verses 4:3-5. What point is Paul making in these verses, and why do you think he is making this point? It you were being brutally honest, on a regular day in your life do you care more about what other people think or about what God thinks? Support your answer with a real life example. Regardless of how much you struggle to be a “people pleaser”, how can you grow in being more focused on what God thinks about you? How can you more deeply live for an audience of One?

5. So what? What specific thing are you taking away from this passage that you applies to your life today?
