John 18:28-19:16
Pre-trial Argument: Jesus deserves death. (18:28-32)
Round 1: Don't release Jesus; release Barabbas! (18:33-40)
Round 2: Flogging isn't enough; kill Him! (19:1-7)
Round 3: We are loyal only to Caesar; crucify Him! (19:8-16)
What do we see in Jesus?
We see His purpose.
We see His humility.
We see His love.
How should we respond?
Mirror Jesus' purpose, humility and love.
Jesus is worthy.
study questions:
1. Warm-up: Have you ever personally been to a trial? How was your experience? What do you thik it would be like if you were on trial and the punishment for a guilty verdict was execution?
2. Read verses 18:28-40. What is the setting of this drama, and who are the main characters? How would you summarize the interaction between the Jewish leaders and Pilate in verses 29-32? What was Jesus' point in his responses to Pilate in verse 34-38? Why do you thin Pilate went back to the Jewish leaders in verses 38b-40? How did the Jews respond?
3. Read verses 19:1-3. What happened to Jesus in these versus? How was Jesus treated? Why did Pilate do this?
4. Read verses 19:4-12. Why do you think Pilate went back to the Jews again about Jesus in verses 4-8? How did the Jews respond? What happened in the interaction between Jesus and Pilate in verses 9-12? What kept Pilate from releasing Jesus?
5. Read verses 19:13-16. What was the final verdict for Jesus and why? How do you think Jesus felt about this conclusion? Pilate? The Jewish leaders?
6. So what? What are your impressions about this trial and about Jesus after studying this passage? What have you learned about Jesus and His love for you? What is one thing that is sticking with you that encourages you, challenges you and/ or applies directly to your life?
