study questions:

1. Read verses 1-11. What was the problem facing Saul and the nation of Israel? How would you describe the setting of the problem? Using a study Bible, the internet or a Bible Dictionary, determine the actual height of Goliath along with the weight of his coat of mail and his spear’s head. Do you think this one huge man is what made the entire Israeli Army so afraid? Why or why not?

2. Read verses 12-29. How was the family of Jesse personally involved with this situation? How did David respond to the news of Goliath’s challenge and the promised reward? Why was David unafraid when the rest of the Israeli Army was so scared?

3. Read verses 31-37. How did Saul hear about David? What happened when David and Saul interacted in person? What convinced Saul to allow David to fight Goliath? What were the consequences if David lost (vs. 9)?

4. Read verses 38-54. How was David armed when he went into battle? What did David say to Goliath (vv. 45-47)? What happened in the battle between David and Goliath and with the Philistines?

5. Summing it up. Who is the main character of this story? Why do you think God included this story with such detail in the Bible? What principles for life can you glean from this passage? What are the giants in your life that you must trust God to defeat?
